Sophieâs eyes go wide, her mouth dropping open as she stares at me. Iâm having a hard time grasping the sudden change myself.
I just spoke to another being, something that I havenât been able to do in years. A torrent of emotion rises up in me, tightening my throat until it feels difficult to breathe. I had resigned myself to never being able to do this again, to being locked in my own head forever. Sophieâs teachings helped a little, but I wasnât so foolish as to truly believe that she could teach me an entire language within any reasonable space of time. Just the few words were enough, I told myself. Just being able to speak with her even a little.
But now I can truly speak and be understood. Until this moment, I never let myself grasp the magnitude of what Iâd lost, knowing Iâd go mad if I did. But now that I seem to have it back, both the grief over having lost it for so long and the pure, thrilling joy of having it back collide, until my heart feels like it will explode out of my chest with emotion.
Sophie looks cautiously happy, though still shocked. I donât blame her.
âI donât understand,â she whispers softly. âWhat happened?â
I lick my lips, trying to slow my racing pulse enough to untangle my thoughts and explain. I attacked one of my masters, and they knocked me out, cut into my head and crushed the chip. I wasââ I take a deep breath. âI was awake for some of it. I donât know how or why it started working again now, but it must have, somehow.â I give her a small smile, trying to soothe her as sheâs done so many times for me. âMaybe all those words that you were teaching me jumpstarted it in some way. Made the neurons in my brain start firing and reconnecting to it. Maybe youâre why itâs working again.â
When I mention the punishment that caused the chip to be crushed in the first place, I see a flare of anger pass through her features, but not surprise. She must have already known or guessed that I was a slave, based on the fact that we were both kept in that squalid warehouse on Nierra. Iâm sure that, as often as she came to visit me in the holding cell in the city here, she was told things about me as well. And I canât imagine that my past
